Sheet, is a short film is about a boy on Halloween night who goes trick-or-treating dressed as a ghost. He meets a ghost boy, and the two spend the night going door to door, collecting candy. Little does he know, his real friend is an actual ghost! With this project, I was a 2D animator and concept artist, coming up with ideas for other trick-or-treaters, backgrounds, and props.
Character Designs
We wanted a group of friends to meet Jimmy and the ghost. I thought of three friends in costumes I've worn during childhood or saw friends wear.
Prop Designs
We wanted a bunch of props and fun candy pieces in the animated short. For these, I thought of fun Halloween decorations, and common things you see on Halloween night - even toothbrushes.
Background Design
Here is a rough sketch of Jimmy's house I made. I had an idea to use fun organic shapes in the backgrounds, and using mis-shaped doors/windows.
Here is another background I had, that involved using organic shapes, and mis-shaped houses. We wanted to create a dusk atmosphere, so we went with blue, green, and purple hues.
Organization
We organized by using Excel. We named scenes, numbered shots, listed the length, who it was assigned to, and a short description. We also kept track of where we were at with the progress (roughs - lineart - color - final edits - BGs).
Another Excel sheet we used was to create goals for ourselves. We looked at the school year, and made realistic goals for ourselves in regards to the amount of animation we wanted to accomplish every week.
